The name topaz comes from the Greek word "topazos" meaning "to shine" which also signifies "fire." Topaz is most commonly found is yellow colour, but it also occures in flax, brown, green, blue, light blue, red and pink ... and sometimes it has no colour at all. Imperial (pink) shades are the rarest and therefore, the most valuable.
In mysticism, the topaz is attributed with a cooling, styptic and appetising effect. It is said to dispel sadness, anger and nocturnal fears. It is reputed to make men handsome and intelligent and sterile women fertile and happy.
It is a fluorine aluminium silicate. With a ranking of "8" on the Mohs scale of hardness topaz has good durability.

The name 'ruby' was derived from the Latin word 'rubens', meaning 'red'. The most important thing about this precious stone is its color. It comes in a variety of shades ranging from purplish-red and bluish-red to orange-red. It is a very rare gemstone. The most prized rubies are intensely saturated, pure red with no overtones of brown or blue.
Red is the color of love. For ages rubies have symbolized passion and romance. The ruby express powerful feelings. A ring set with a ruby bears witness to that passionate, unbridled love that people feel can for each other. It is also the color of blood. The stone is symbol of courage and bravery.
Ruby is the red variety of corundum, of which the sapphire is also a variety. Pure corundum is colorless. For magnificent color of ruby are responsible slight traces of elements such as chrome, iron, titanium or vanadium. Only red corundum is entitled to be called ruby, all other colors being classified as sapphires. Whit hardness of "9" on the Mohs scale ruby is the second hardest material known after diamond.
