Selecting the Right Necklace for the Occasion
Choosing the right necklace is not as simple as you might think. Your body type and your outfit can impact the way a necklace looks. Even the classic string of pearls will not work perfectly with every outfit. In order to pair the right necklace with the right occasion, follow these tips:
1) If you are wearing a "V" shape neckline, select a necklace that has the same "v" contour. Opt for the necklace that is not too far above or too much below the "V." Avoid a round shaped necklace with your "v" neckline - the shape of your necklace will compete too much with the shape of your neckline.
2) A round necklace looks best with a round shaped necklace. Simple strings of pearls work great with this neckline. Real or fake, pearls come in white, black, and pink, which look great with most clothing styles.
3) If you are well-endowed, stay away from long, dangly necklaces with several layers. The necklace will only call attention to your chest, and will also lie bumpily on your outfit.
4) If you are wearing a complicated neckline or an outfit with lots of detailing at the neckline, opt for a simple chocker or skip the necklace entirely. Too much detailing at the neckline can look too busy.
5) If you have a long, pretty neck, opt for a simple choker or a necklace that is very short. This will call attention to your best feature.
6) If you have a short neck, look in jewelry stores for longer necklaces.
7) If the neckline of your outfit is high -- over your collar bone -- consider not wearing any necklace. Add interest to the face area with hair accessories or great earrings.
8) Wearing a huge draping necklace is tricky. Your best bet is to avoid other very noticeable pieces of jewelry so that your necklace can stand out.
9) If you want to offset a great necklace, choose a simple outfit. A complex necklace with several strands or a very large pendant looks best with a very simple outfit in a neutral color. A simple black dress, for example, can handle a dramatic necklace. Simple stud earrings and simple shoes are best - too much accessorizing and too complicated an outfit can be too distracting to the eye.
10) If your necklace is very colorful – if it has bright rubies, for example, or a bright pendant - choose neutral colored clothing in a solid texture. Simple black clothing will offset your bright necklace the best.
11) If you are wearing a turtleneck, opt for a 20 to 24-inch necklace that falls well below the neck or skip the necklace entirely and accessorize with great earrings, instead.
12) The straight across the chest strapless neckline is very versatile. As long as your necklace is under 18 inches, you can choose from chokers, multiple strands, pendants, and just about any other style.
13) Be sure to match the color and texture of your necklace to your outfit. If your outfit is complex, a simpler texture is best. Gold, pearl, diamond, and silver necklaces are neutral and will work with most colors.
